Name and Gender Marker Change
In order to change your name, and to change the gender marker on your birth certificate you will need to contact Births, Deaths and Marriages of the state or territory you were born in.
For anyone who was born overseas, you can change your name and gender marker by following the rules of the state or territory which you have lived in for the past 12 months.

Here are some of the documents and places you may need to update after changing your name and gender marker. One suggestion is to go through your wallet and make your own list of everything in it.

- Proof of Age/Key Card
- Tax file number
- Australian and State/Territory electoral roll information
- Bank account/s
- Medicare card
- Centrelink
- Superannuation
- Library card
- Any insurance you may have
- Public transport card
- Student card
- Work/Study details
- Working with children check
Federal Documents
Even if you are unable to change your gender marker on your birth certificate, you can change the gender marker on your passport, which can then be used to change most other documents.
